Sens 2, Flyers 0: Excuse Me Mr. Carcillo, But You Seem To Have Dropped Your Face E-mail
Written by SLC
Wednesday, 24 March 2010 21:03

I would have watched that all day.  If I could have.  Unfortunately, Her Majesty's IT Gestapo, being the fun loving fanatical anti-YouTube zealots they are, would have frowned upon my attempts to bypass the firewall, while tossing about ugly words like "unauthorized bandwidth usage" and "not official government business" and "up to and including dismissal" and "you're fired"...so I, um, didn't.  But I would have!  Personally, I blame it on Ann Coulter (as I do most things, actually).

Predictably enough, opinions vary somewhat on the legality of A-Train's destruction of Danny Boy's higher brain functions (I'll leave that statement to you wonderful commenters.  Yep.  Just sitting there.  Right there).

On the one side, those brave souls who say it's clean and provide fine forensic investigations to back up their case.  On the other, mouthbreathing trolls who insist that A-Train's hit was a blatant elbow and therefore, he must be suspended FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHILDREN!!11!  Note to these last: If ever a sequence of words such as "Volchenkov is a [profane] a la Claude Lemieux, he plays dirty but when it's time defend himself he backs off" appears anywhere in your argument, you've obviously never watched a single Ottawa Senators game in your life.  In fact, it is quite possible that you are functionally retarded and should have all sharp objects removed from your immediate vicinity post haste, not only for your safety, but also for that of innocent passers by.

I find myself firmly in the third camp.  The main thrust of our particular argument reads thusly: "Who gives a shit if it was clean or cheap.  It's Dan Fucking Carcillo, for Christ sake."

Jump for the happy pants.

The Dizzying Highs:

But wait!  There's more!: Oh, we're not done with you yet Anton.  Not done by a long shot.  Not only do I completely absolve you on the Gagne hit (here's a hint, Simon.  If you're going to turn around without giving the onrushing player enough time to avoid the hit "from behind", you deserve to spend the next three days picking carbon fiber out of your rectum.  Just sayin.  Oh, and thanks for losing your shit), but in light of your goal mouth performance over the last two games, I'd also like to present you with this shiny trophy!

You had me at splat: I would ask the following favour of the next yob to knuckle punch "Fire Murray!" into the Ottawa Sun's various comment sections.  Please gaze upon the majestic debris field left by one Andy Sutton over the last three games.  Now ask Benoit Pouliot (twice) and the aforementioned ass pimple that is Daniel Carcillo (WHEE!!) whether he was worth a second round pick.  He MUST be re-signed, Bryan, no matter what you have to do to free up enough cap room.  The very thought of Nazeem Kadri and Phil Kessel running the Big Rig-A-Train-Sutton-Jared Cowen gauntlet excites me in unspeakable ways.

Now playing the role of The Competent Goalie...: I have no idea how he's doing it or how long it will last, but Brian Elliott must be given his due.  One hundred and twenty consecutive minutes of shut-out hockey at the most pressure packed point in the season deserves all of the accolades with which he is currently being showered.  We would all do well to remember this when the next, inevitable, four-goals-on-nine-shots bed shitting occurs.  The smart money is on Game 2 of the first round.

The Terrifying Lows:

I wonder how many Andy Suttons five million dollars would buy?: Fuck you Kovy.  I am completely and utterly done with you.  Seriously, I don't give a shit if you score 50 in the last eight games, because I know you'll just disappear again in the playoffs.  After all, that's when the big boys come to play, and Lord knows, you ain't one of them.  Get the hell off my team, you fucking floater.

And I won't even mention the other six: I have never, in my life, ever seen a seven minute power play given to any team, ever (number of "evers" to denote a certain incredulity tinged with frustrated sadness).  It took me the first four minutes just to make the math work in my own head, and I'm still not sure I got it right.  I eventually gave up the attempt in favour of wondering how on God's green earth, two posts notwithstanding, we don't score at least one with (and this bears repeating) a seven fucking minute man advantage.  I'm looking at you, Carvel.

Pithy Observation of Questionable Importance:

This video review brought to you by Abraham Zapruder: The only thing missing from the epic six minute, multiple angle war room review of A-Train's goal line scoop was a Kevin Costner voiceover narrating every one of SportsNet's eleventy thousand replays..."Back...and to the left".  And maybe Tommy Lee Jones ass raping Kevin Bacon while Joe Pesci snorts coke from the lapels of his Louis XIV costume.  That would have been cool too.  Then again, I may have watched that movie just once too often for my own good.

The Creamy Middle:

I don't think anyone would disagree with me when I say that this was an ugly, vicious game.  And that's a great thing indeed.  In short it was a the perfect pre-playoff, playoff game, and if there were ever any doubts about how the boys need to play once the real games start they should be pretty much erased now.  Bring that for sixteen games, and I might just get more excited about our prospects than I have any right to be.

Up Next:

Friday, on the road, in Buffalo.  Thanks to the Habs puking up a two goal lead with less than three minutes to go earlier tonight (thanks for that, asshats) the division title and the third seed that comes with it are pretty much toast.  That said, it's still a division game, and we still own their ass. (7:30pm, TSN and Petey MagSplooge in all of his screamiest glory with the coverage).

Behind Enemy Lines:

Let us once again renew and reaffirm our blog crush for Katebits and The Willful Caboose.  Though I've never met her, spoken to her, nor even seen a picture, I'm comfortable in my assertion that she is by far the funniest, most informed, knowledgeable and, dare I say, attractive hockey blogging viola player currently touring with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.  I enjoy her writing so much, I almost feel bad for pwning the Sabres the way we do.  Almost.

Go Sens.

"Get the hell off my team, you fucking floater."
I want that on a playoff bumper sticker.
Sorry SLC but you should hear this from somebody who cares...

Hi there...how shall i phrase this gently.
We will not, be able, to resign, A-train.
(Ducks to avoid flying brick).
A-train has turned down a variety of big money deals. His AGENT is that of satan. I mean Yashin.
So you know hes gonna screw us. A-train wants over 4 million/year. Hes pointing to Commodores contracts and Komisarek.

While i am totally willing to give him 20 million over 5 years, even at the cost of resigning Big Rig, who hasnt been as dominant in the last 2 years and who will be too old when we are ready to contend...apparently the Bryan isnt.

I was all set for a future blue line of Cowen Karlsson, Volchenkov Wiercioch, with Blood Gryba Bowreiki Blood in the wings...but apparently our russian train has made up his mind to leave the station.

2nd bit of bad news. I dont know if youve notice SLC, but they Bryan has pretty much failed to sign anybody hes traded for. Stillman, Commodore. We may be saying farewell to Campoli soon.

I love the Bryan. I love what hes done with the place and the future hes started to set up here. But that is my big quam with him. Never seems to be able to clear cap space to resign key players. Even if it means taking a loss in a deal to get the space.

So dont be so sure that Sutton is staying around. Hes currently making 3 million. He's already 35.

Our d will likely, though i hope not, look like this.

Phillips Cowen
Kuba Karlsson
______ Lee...

Yeah...not fucking pretty.
I love sutton, but for the love of **** i wanted A-train and Cowen for the future. We have 2 more great d on the way, 1 is cowen. And we have hard skating, hard hitting, bruisers like Bowriechi and a sudo volchenkov in Gryba....but thats years and years away.
changes needed.

The Bryan i have assigned the following homework this off-season...assuming he isnt fired and Melnyk brings in Yzerman.

0.With the 1st round pick, draft a CANADIAN FORWARD, whos above 6 foot, and whos top 6 forward proven in the minors. There are 6+ of these guys scattered through the later rankings, even real late i see 30 goal scorers & 60 pointers in the ohl and whl.

DO NOT take a russian, PERIOD,ive heard about that one guy, DONT DRAFT HIM. I dont care if they are ranked high cuz of skill. The canadian kids are proven to excel in the big show.
Dont take a swede or a finn whos got 8 goals and 20 points in some "elite league". Most wont pan out.

CANADIAN. TOP 6 FORWARD. Goal scorer. ppg or near. 6foot +. GOT IT!?!? Repeat at the next 3 drafts with 1st round pick.

1.Trade Volchenkov before or at the draft. Dont lose him for nothing.
2.Resign Foligno, Regin and Winchester.
3.Move a decent sized contract. A kelly, a Kuba.
4.Make some small moves. Guys like Ruutu are useless. Let donovan go. Z.Smith and Cody Bass are to be on this team next year.
5.In f.a acquire a pp dman with a big gun.
6.In f.a acquire Boogard if hes there, or Shelley if he isnt.

That would make our bottom six consist of
Z.Smith,Neil, Bass, Winchester.
Now thats Flyers/Flames/Bruins style grit. And all of them are quick too. Theyll catch you!
Boogard or Shelley would just be so Carkner can focus on protecting Karlsson and Lee

@Neil: Jeez, man. Quit harshin' my trip, dude (is that how the kids say it? Yeah, didn't think so).

Truth is, I don't really expect the D of my dreams to materialize. But the off-season is a long way off (we hope), the playoffs are just around the corner and anything is possible. Just go with it.

Wow! @ neil_danz – dude… no need for the buzz kill right now… lets wait until we’re bounce in the second round by a much better Washington team.

As for our future D corps, Volchie taking a home town discount shouldn’t be too far out of the question. Maybe 6 years 21M. Long term is the key here. Also, I believe Yashin’s agent was Mark Gandler, and Volchie’s is Jay Grossman, who is probably most famous for bribing Malkin’s parents before he was drafted. Aside from the point really, either Murray has the cash or he doesn’t.

On to Carcillo. I have no problems when douche bags getting their eggs scrambled. It’s almost karmic in a way. Volchie plays on an edge that most don’t. That edge will eventually come back to hurt him by his body breaking down faster than we hope. Maybe we luck out and Volchie becomes a Gary Roberts-esque cyborg, and plays useful hockey until he’s 40. On a side note, would the procedure of reinforcing Volchie’s skeleton with adamantium be covered by OHIP? Would the funds required count against the cap? All questions that must be answered….!

Look. The boys are playing well right now. Even in those past couple losses, the forwards were doing alright, and the other teams were simply able to take advantage of mistakes by the D, and terrible goaltending by Snoopy. Nothing can be done about those games now. What I do see is a vigour which is carrying this team into the playoffs, and pushing them all to that same edge Volchie plays with every night. This is why we are seeing more penalties, more rough and tumble play, and more destructive hits, like the ones Volchie and Andy “Brick Shithouse” Sutton have been throwing around the past week. It’s a good sign. That’s playoff hockey.

Yeah, Sutton is in buyer beware territory - 3.5M over 2 years might be his last deal, old and slowing (See Jason Smith). Seidenberg is still UFA if Boston doesn't extend him so remains an option in the summer. Probably doesn't have the same mean streak (big hit propensity) but still viable.

Kovalev is being Kovalev, but has good playoff numbers. Has the ability to help win a game or two. This will be a test for him. If he floats and doesn't show up through round 1, he's de-valuing himself for future contracts. Next year is a swan song or he can forget getting any offers to rejoin les glorieux for 2011-2012.

I watched les habs merdent leurs pantalons last night. It was impressive. Pepe le pew would have been proud.

Alright… you may not want to read this, but hear me out here. Lets say B-Murr decide to cut bait with a handful of guys, either via trade, or burying them in the minors (like Cheech). How about this? Volchie will get a HUGE offer on the UFA market and Ottawa will not be able to sign him, and Murray deals his rights at the draft. Where does he go? Who needs him? Talk is Washington, Detroit, and maybe Phoenix. So who comes back? Will it just be a pick, or will the Bryan go after players? Let’s assume it’s a high pick, hell, maybe even a first…. Then, maybe he pulls off another shocker and deals Kovy back to Montreal or wherever. That’s now 7.5M in cap space open. Keep Cheech in the minors? 10.5M. Off load Kelly? 13M. Snoopy? 16.5M. If he doesn’t resign Sutton and Cullen 21.5M. GONE!

All of a sudden, you’ve dumped a bunch of dead weight (except Kelly) and you have a shitload of cap to work with. Now, are you willing to let the young guys take a shot? Let’s say you can get Cullen and Sutton to come back for 2.5 each over two years (reasonable at their age). Foligno and Regin resign for 1.5 each over two years….Your team now looks like this…. At 43M. 13M in cap space would be kind of nice with this team still intact like this. This also assume none of our prospects pull a Carks and force us to keep them (although that wouldn’t be half bad)

Regin – Spezza – Michalak
Fisher – Cullen – Alfie
Ruutu – Foligno – Neil
Winch – O’Brien – Z.Smith

Kuba – Phillips
Sutton – Karlsson
Blee – Carks

Elliott
Brodeur

Discuss amongst yourselves….
...

Extra coin to add a decent defenseman and a another sensible top 9 forward. Drop Winchester back to the healthy scratch role and Ruutu to the fourth line.

Arguably Brodeur appears a better option than Snoopy right now, but his show time has been limited. It'd be nice to see Brodeur for 10 games or so before assuming he can fill in as a 2nd in a tandem. Face it Elliott is not a 50+ game goaltender (yet) and the backup will have to start at least 25 games.

Back to back shutouts doesn't put him in as a starter, but 5 SO on the year is a good start for his argument.

It'll be interesting to see what tunes people will be singing when playoffs are done ...

EEEEEEEEE!

@MFP3: The idea is sound (big BIG fan of the "Kovy back to the Habs" idea. Too bad Savard isn't running that team anymore), but I think your numbers might be too low. Case in point, I don't see Spawn of Mike or Great Dane playing for 750K per. And that's an awfully young 4th line you've got there.

But then again, change frightens me, so take that for what it's worth.

@Katebits: You're too modest, girl. I'd hazard not only Buffalo, but all of Upstate New York!
Heres what you do. Practical, easy, realistic.
written by neil_danz, March 26, 2010
@Everyone!
All is easier said then done. kuba has ntc.
NOBODY wants Kovalev. So forget it.

Volchenkov is asking for 4+mill per year. He "says" its about term. But murray offered him a long term contract for 3.75mill/year and A-train turned it down. he wants 4+million.
He was a 1st round pick who has materialized.
If your wondering who would be gunning for his rights at the draft there is 1 team in my mind, that STANDS ABOVE THE REST: The Anaheim Ducks. Theyve lost Pronger. Their d is offense oriented and not tough. Anaheim has 2 1st round picks.

Murray will and SHOULD be judged by how much he gets back for A-train. A competent gm would let the teams compete for his rights and up the ainty till he gets the return he wants. If murray has lost his touch he will take a bad return. Hes a fool if he lets him walk! With about 5 teams juggling for his rights, that A-train was a 1st rounder and hes just 26 years old, there is no way murray should have a problem getting a 1st and a top defensive prospect. Or a 2nd, and a good defensive prospect.

Now for players who CAN be moved. And must be to get some cap space. Cap space being the key.

#1.Chris Kelly-73gp 14GOALS 16assists=30points.
2 more contract years after this 2.215mill.
Before he had 4 and 3 years, nobodys taking that, also he stopped scoring goals. NOW to the outside eye you have a top penalty killer and defensive forward whos gonna score 15 or more goals and get 30 or more points, whos only got 2.215 for the next 2 seasons. His current refound scoring, 2 less contract years and his price NOW MAKE HIM WANTED.
MOVE HIM MURRAY. Prospects/picks, little salary coming back. This shouldnt be hard now!

#2. Yarko Ruutu-74gp 11goals 11 assists 22points.
Lets see. 1 more year after this at 1.3. A 4th line grinder, hitter and fighter who can get you 10+goals. He also comes with entangibles. PEST, good pk and WICKED shootout skills.
Move him for a pick murray. NO contract salary coming back. This shouldnt be difficult at all.

#3 Sean Donovan. Let him walk. Was making 0.625.
So EASILY murray should be able to move all 3 salaries and not take any money back. Its easy with these guys. IT IS! Thats a total of $4.05 million cap savings so far.

#4.Sutton IS buyer beware. Old and slow. Unless he takes a massive cut. Let him walk! 3 million gone.

#5 Cheechoo. Kep him away from the cap, waivers, minors. 3 million gone.

ALL OF THOSE 5 should be simple and easy to pull off to the LAST DETAIL.
Cap clearance/savings: 10.05million! Thats can go along way to keeping a-train, but at what cost? Lets assume the bryan does the good right thing, gets a good return for A-train a high pick 1st or high 2nd, and player(s).

Now to the possible resigns. * indicate more likely.

1.Matt Cullen. Was making 2.8. Older now. Resign for 3 years around 2.75. Basically switching out Kelly for Cullen. Upgrade! Can play top 6, will be here long term, can step in for that p.o.s Kovalev.

*2.Foligno-he didnt get goals and got hurt, cant demand big money yet. 1.5-1.75.

*3.Regin-didnt put up big points yet. 1.25-1.45

*4.Winchester-sign for no more than shannon. 0.6.

5.Campoli he will be in and out of line up. Sign for 0.9-1mill.

If you get all those 5 back, at the max price i set.
10.05-7.55=2.5 Cap space still gained.

Now we need to fill 2 holes on the forward position, all in the bottom 6.

Z.Smith makes the team. 0.583 still 1 more contract year. INSERT into 3rd line center. Not the 4th line.

Cody Bass makes the team. 0.513 still 1 more contract year. 4th line C or RW whatever Winchester isnt.

Cap space left 1.4mill. HOW. EASY and Practical was that?!?

Team Roster with depth like this:

Michalek Spezza Alfredsson
Cullen Fisher Kovi
Team would look like:

Clean hit!

It was a clean hit, a great hit and Carcillo is a puke anyway. He's an agitator, got his team two penalties and he can just suck it.
